Lila Avilés Film TÓTEM Sets Criterion Channel, Digital Streaming Premiere Date

The Criterion Channel has set a premiere date for Lila Avilés’s acclaimed film TÓTEM, which will begin streaming on their platform on April 23rd, 2024. The film world premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival before launching in US theaters on January 26th, 2024. It will also be available for sale and rental on VOD and digital platforms.

Tótem was written and directed by Lila Avilés. The film depicts the story of seven-year-old Sol, who is spending the day at her grandfather's home, for a surprise party for Sol's father, Tonatiuh. As daylight fades, Sol comes to understand that her world is about to change dramatically.

The film received critical acclaim and was named one of the top five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review. It was selected as the Mexican entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, and made the shortlist of 15 entries from which the nominees were selected. It ultimately was not nominated.
