When Will Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny be Streaming?

The Forecast: Sequels and franchises have taken a beating at the box-office in the summer of 2023. What looked like a victory lap for our beloved Indiana Jones (and Harrison Ford) started to turn sour when the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Critics were underwhelmed, and suddenly the endeavor was being perceived as stale and long in the tooth.

Never mind that the reaction was much more positive when the film was released at the end of June. The stench of failure couldn’t be shaken, and as the opening weekend box-office was counted, Indy wasn’t whipping up any enthusiasm. With a production budget around a reported $300 million, it wouldn’t come close to making its money back in theaters.

So it’ll be up to ancillary revenues to make up some of the loses. No matter how you look at it, Indiana Jones has long-term value as a brand. Fans will buy the blu-ray. It’ll be special-editioned with the other four Indy films. It’ll be licensed for SVOD and television for as long as those mediums exist. It might take 50 years, but it’s likely to make its money back.

In determining a projected PVOD release date for DIAL OF DESTINY, let’s take a quick look at how Disney has windowed it's other (non-20th Century/Searchlight) 2023 releases:

• THE LITTLE MERMAID

  • In Theaters: May 26, 2023

  • PVOD: July 25, 2023 (60 Days)

  • Disney+: TBA

That’s a pretty consistent window for both PVOD and SVOD. Disney has a couple of events in the fall (Disney+ Day, 100th Anniversary Celebration) that could impact Indy 5’s SVOD launch, but we’re guessing its PVOD date will be consistent with the rest of the slate.
