Cannes 2025: First Reactions to Wes Anderson’s THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME

The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, and reactions to some of the highly-anticipated world premieres are starting to arrive. Today brought the premiere of Wes Anderson’s THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME, which is playing In Competition and will be released in the US by Focus Features. It will open in limited release on May 30th, 2025, before expanding nationwide on June 6th.

The Phoenician Scheme is produced, written and directed by Wes Anderson from a story he conceived with Roman Coppola. The film features an ensemble cast including Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rupert Friend, and Hope Davis.

In the film, wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (del Toro) appoints his only daughter (Threapleton), a nun, as sole heir to his estate. As Korda embarks on a new enterprise, they soon become the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists and determined assassins.
