The acclaimed documentary APOCALYPSE IN THE TROPICS is set to make its streaming debut this summer, arriving on Netflix on July 14th, 2025. The film world premiered out of competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

Apocalypse in the Tropics is directed by Petra Costa and co-written by Costa, David Barker, Alessandra Orofino, Nels Bangerter, and Tina Baz.

When does a democracy end and a theocracy begin? In Apocalypse in the Tropics, Petra Costa investigates the increasingly powerful grip Christian evangelical leaders hold over politics in Brazil. She gains extraordinary access to the country’s top political leaders, including President Lula and former president Bolsonaro, as well as to Brazil’s most famous televangelist: a magnetic pastor who aspires to play puppet master to the far-right leader.

Costa’s previous documentary, 2019’s The Edge of Democracy, explored her native Brazil’s turbulent political history over the last several decades. It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

We’ve added the release date to our Streaming calendar. Check out a short teaser for the film made for the Stockholm International Film Festival below.
