THE AMATEUR - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Synopsis: After his life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, a brilliant but introverted CIA decoder takes matters into his own hands when his supervisors refuse to take action.

What we like:

  • The journey to adapt Robert Littell's 1981 novel into this film spanned nearly two decades. Initially announced in 2006 with Hugh Jackman attached, the project underwent numerous changes before culminating in the 2025 release with Rami Malek in the lead role.

  • The film was shot across various international locations, including London, Paris, Marseille, Istanbul, and Washington, D.C. We’re always happy when an action thriller wasn’t shot in front of a blue-screen in a parking lot in Atlanta.

  • Marthe Keller, who co-starred in the 1981 film adaptation of The Amateur, makes a brief appearance in the 2025 film as a florist in Paris.

What we don’t like:

  • The film’s screenplay involved contributions from ten writers, including notable names like Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion) and Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls). Ultimately, Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli received official credit, but it’s never a great sign with that many cooks in the kitchen.

CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Synopsis: Quinn and her father have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time.

What we like:

  • Based on Adam Cesare’s 2020 young adult horror novel of the same name, this adaptation was announced even before the book's release. Cesare's novel is the first in a trilogy, with the third installment, Clown in a Cornfield 3: The Church of Frendo, released in August 2024.

  • The film earned $3.6M over its opening weekend, marking a record for longtime indie distributor IFC Films.

  • Director Eli Craig is best known for the horror-comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which we thought was pretty good!

What we don’t like:

  • Despite the film’s record-breaking start, it failed to out-gross IFC’s 2024 horror hit Late Night With the Devil, which topped over $10M total. Clown in a Cornfield currently sits at $7.2M (still a huge indie success!).

Clown in a Cornfield
Starring Katie Douglas, Aaron Abrams, Carson MacCormac, Kevin Durand, Will Sasso

MISERICORDIA - The Criterion Channel (8p ET), $19.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: Jérémie returns to his hometown for the funeral of his former boss, the village baker. He decides to stay for a few days with Martine, the man's widow. A mysterious disappearance, a threatening neighbor and a priest with strange intentions make Jérémie's short stay in the village take an unexpected turn.

What we like:

  • Alain Guiraudie’s dark comedy thriller world premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Queer Palm.

  • The film was shot in the scenic Aveyron region of southern France, using villages like Sauclières, Millau, Nant, and Saint-Jean-du-Bruel to portray the fictional town of Saint-Martial.

  • Cinematographer Claire Mathon, best known for her work on Portrait of a Lady on Fire, collaborated with Guiraudie for the third time.

What we don’t like:

  • The film received eight nominations at the 50th César Awards, including Best Film, but won none.

Misericordia
Starring Félix Kysyl, Catherine Frot, Jacques Develay, Jean-Baptiste Durand, David Ayala, Sébastien Faglain, Tatiana Spivakova, Salomé Lopes, Serge Richard, Elio Lunetta

WHEN FALL IS COMING - $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: Michelle is enjoying a peaceful retirement in a Burgundy village, close to her longtime friend Marie-Claude. When her Parisian daughter Valérie drops off her son Lucas to spend school vacation with his grandma, Michelle, stressed out by her daughter, serves her toxic mushrooms for lunch. Valérie quickly recovers, but forbids her mother from seeing her grandson anymore. Feeling lonely and guilty, Michelle falls into a depression... until Marie-Claude's son gets out of prison.

What we like:

  • The film's premise was inspired by a personal incident from director François Ozon's life. One of his aunts once prepared a meal with mushrooms she had foraged herself, leading to everyone falling ill—except her, as she hadn't eaten them. Ozon found this event fascinating and suspected his aunt might have had ulterior motives, which sparked the idea for the film's central plot.

  • Ozon reunited with several actors he had previously worked with: Hélène Vincent, Pierre Lottin and Josiane Balasko starred in 2018’s By the Grace of God, and Ludivine Sagnier memorably starred in the filmmaker’s hit film Swimming Pool (2003).

What we don’t like:

  • Despite stellar reviews and a cozy autumnal aesthetic, the film failed to do much business in arthouse theaters, grossing only $128K. Let’s hope it finds its audience on streaming.

SNOW WHITE - Disney+

Synopsis: Following the benevolent King's disappearance, the Evil Queen dominated the once fair land with a cruel streak. Princess Snow White flees the castle when the Queen, in her jealousy over Snow White's inner beauty, tries to kill her. Deep into the dark woods, she stumbles upon seven magical dwarves and a young bandit named Jonathan. Together, they strive to survive the Queen's relentless pursuit and aspire to take back the kingdom.

What we like:

  • Rachel Zegler was tapped for the titular role, with her casting reportedly influenced by a glowing recommendation from director Steven Spielberg, who had worked with her on West Side Story

  • In this adaptation, Snow White's name doesn't reference her skin color. Instead, it's derived from a backstory where she and her parents survive a snowstorm.

  • The film features original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, including "Waiting on a Wish," "All Is Fair," and "A Hand Meets a Hand," while also incorporating reimagined versions of classics like "Heigh-Ho" and "Whistle While You Work."

What we don’t like:

  • This looks like a horror movie to us. The CGI dwarves look terrifying, though little Dopey in the front looks like the love child of Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in Challengers.

Snow White
Starring Rachel Zegler, Andrew Burnap, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Swift, Tituss Burgess, Andrew Barth Feldman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Martin Klebba, Jason Kravits, George Salazar, Andy Grotelueschen, Patrick Page, Emilia Faucher, Ansu Kabia, Hadley Fraser, George Appleby, Colin Carmichael, Samuel Baxter, Jimmy Johnston, Dujonna Gift, Idriss Kargbo

DEEP COVER - Prime Video

Synopsis: Kat is an improv comedy teacher beginning to question if she’s missed her shot at success. When an undercover cop offers her the role of a lifetime, she recruits two of her students to infiltrate London’s gangland by impersonating dangerous criminals.

What we like:

  • Tom Kingsley directs a stellar cast in this British action comedy, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, Ian McShane, Paddy Considine, Sean Bean, and Sonoya Mizuno.

  • The screenplay was penned by Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow, known for their work on Jurassic World, along with British comedy duo Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen.

What we don’t like:

  • It’s been quite a while since a Prime Video original movie really delivered, but hope springs eternal. The cast is encouraging, even if Howard still has some residual Argylle-stink to overcome.

Deep Cover
Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, Nick Mohammed, Sean Bean, Ian McShane, Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno

ABSOLUTION - Hulu

Synopsis: An aging ex-boxer gangster working as muscle for a Boston crime boss receives an upsetting diagnosis. Despite a faltering memory, he attempts to rectify the sins of his past and reconnect with his estranged children. He is determined to leave a positive legacy for his grandson, but the criminal underworld isn’t done with him and won’t loosen their grip willingly.

What we like:

  • Liam Neeson reunites with filmmaker Hans Petter Moland, who directed Neeson’s 2019 actioner Cold Pursuit.

  • Neeson's character grapples with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain condition, and the actor’s own experience as an amateur boxer from ages 9 to 17 informed his performance.

What we don’t like:

  • The film was initially titled Thug, reflecting the protagonist's past as a mob enforcer. Neeson felt Absolution better encapsulated the character's essence. That may be true, but Thug is a better title!

Absolution
Starring Liam Neeson, Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, Daniel Diemer, Yolonda Ross, William Xifaras

BONJOUR TRISTESSE - $12.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: At the height of summer, 18-year-old Cécile is relaxing by the French seaside with her father and falling in love with her new boyfriend. The arrival of her late mother's enigmatic friend turns her world upside down.

What we like:

  • Durga Chew-Bose makes her feature-length directorial debut here. Initially brought on as a screenwriter, her vivid vision led producers to entrust her with directing the film as well.

  • The film is a contemporary adaptation of Françoise Sagan's 1954 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted to film in 1958 by Otto Preminger.

What we don’t like:

  • The movie was shot in Cassis, a picturesque town in the south of France. We don’t like that we don’t have a summer house there. Suppose we’ll just have to settle for watching the film.

CLEANER - HBO Max

Synopsis: When a group of radical activists take over an energy company's annual gala, seizing 300 hostages, an ex-soldier turned window cleaner suspended 50 storeys up on the outside of the building must save those trapped inside, including her younger brother.

What we like:

  • Daisy Ridley gets her very own ‘Die Hard on a ____’ movie, this time with a plot that seems very similar to Die Hard. But in this one, instead of ending up dangling from the outside of a skyscraper, she starts there.

  • Martin Campbell is the director here, and while he’s had his share of stinkers, the man who directed The Mask of Zorro, GoldenEye, and especially Casino Royale, will always give us some optimism.

What we don’t like:

  • Unfortunately, reviews have been so-so for this action thriller. Still, with an appealing lead and a capable director, we’re willing to give it a shot.

Cleaner
Starring Daisy Ridley, Taz Skyler, Clive Owen

ECHO VALLEY - Apple TV+

Synopsis: Kate lives a secluded life—until her troubled daughter shows up, frightened and covered in someone else's blood. As Kate unravels the shocking truth, she learns just how far a mother will go to try to save her child.

What we like:

  • Michael Pearce directs this thriller, from a script by Brad Ingelsby, who created the Emmy-winning HBO series Mare of Easttown.

  • The film has a mouth-watering roster of talent: Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, Domhnall Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Kyle MacLachlan, and Edmund Donovan.

  • Early reviews are mixed, but certainly encouraging enough to give it a shot.

What we don’t like:

  • We’re not sure what Apple’s theatrical strategy is these days. The upcoming F1 is getting a full wide release, which makes sense. But Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest will only be in theaters for two weeks before it hits Apple TV+. It feels like original films are just not a huge priority for the company, as they only release 1 or 2 a month (at most).

Echo Valley
Starring Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, Domhnall Gleeson, Fiona Shaw, Kyle MacLachlan, Edmund Donovan
