28 YEARS LATER - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental

Synopsis: Twenty-eight years since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one member departs on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

What we like:

  • The film reunites original director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, marking a full-circle return to the style of the original 2002 classic.

  • Shot primarily using iPhone 15 Pro Max devices (plus action cameras and drones), the film echoes the original’s digital aesthetic but in an even wider 2.76:1 aspect ratio.

  • The film features some powerhouse actors, including Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, but the real breakout is young newcomer Alfie Williams, who anchors the movie with emotional depth and maturity.

What we don’t like:

  • Though a sequel was shot and is scheduled to arrive in early 2026 (directed by Nia DaCosta), Boyle and Garland have envisioned a trilogy for this phase of the franchise. The third film has not been announced, which is a little worrying.

28 Years Later
Starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Ralph Fiennes

HOT MILK - $14.99 Sale / $6.99 Rental

Synopsis: Rose and her daughter Sofia travel to the Spanish seaside town of Almería to consult with the shamanic Dr. Gomez, a physician who could possibly hold the cure to Rose’s mystery illness, which has left her bound to a wheelchair. But in the sultry atmosphere of this sun-bleached town Sofia, who has been trapped by her mother’s illness all her life, finally starts to shed her inhibitions, enticed by the persuasive charms of enigmatic traveller Ingrid.

What we like:

  • The directorial debut of Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s, best known for her acclaimed writing on projects like Disobedience and She Said. She adapts the story from Deborah Levy’s 2016 novel of the same name.

  • Although the narrative unfolds on Spain’s sun-drenched coast, the film was actually shot in Greece. If you’re looking for a virtual vacation, this might be for you.

  • The film features a trio of actresses we’ll watch in anything: Emma MacKey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps.

What we don’t like:

  • Reviews of the film were mixed at best, it currently sits at a 54 on Metacritic. Still…a Mediterranean setting, fantastic actresses, lesbian psycho-drama…sounds like it’s worth checking out.

  • Also…we can’t imagine the title helped pull in an audience. We loathe generic titles, and this one is certainly unique. But it’s also a little off-putting.

Hot Milk
Starring Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, Vincent Perez, Vicky Krieps, Patsy Ferran, Yann Gael, Vangelis Mourikis

THE LIFE OF CHUCK - $19.99 Sale / TBD Rental

Synopsis: In this extraordinary story of an ordinary man, Charles 'Chuck' Krantz experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.

What we like:

  • Written and directed by Mike Flanagan, the film marks his third Stephen King adaptation following 2017’s Gerald’s Game and 2019’s Doctor Sleep.

  • The film world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, where it won the coveted People’s Choice Award, beating out 2nd and 3rd place finishers Emilia Pérez and Anora.

  • The film unfolds in reverse chronological order, starting with Chuck’s death from a brain tumor at age 39 and then tracing backwards through his life in three acts.

What we don’t like:

  • This was a rough one for distributor NEON. They made the decision to hold back the film until June 2025, and audiences pretty much just ignored it. Despite a full marketing push, and semi-wide release, it has yet to break $7M at the domestic box-office. Could it experience a Shawshank Redemption-like trajectory and build awards buzz through the Fall? Seems like a long shot.

The Life of Chuck
Starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mia Sara, Carl Lumbly, Benjamin Pajak, Jacob Tremblay, Mark Hamill

BORDERLINE - Peacock

Synopsis: After escaping from a mental hospital, a violent sociopath named Paul begins a dangerous rampage targeting Sofia, a world-famous pop star. Obsessed with her, he takes Sofia hostage in her own home, acting under the delusional belief that they are getting married. Paul is desperate to prove his devotion, leading to a tense and unpredictable situation.

What we like:

  • Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden makes his directorial debut in this 90s-set comedy thriller. We’re hoping he brings some of that Cocaine Bear gonzo energy, though this film doesn’t have Margo Martindale, so it’s already working at a deficit.

  • Warden’s real-life wife Samara Weaving is the lead, and she’s proven to be a capable scream queen in films like Ready or Not, Scream VI, and last year’s Azrael.

What we don’t like:

  • Nepo-baby discourse alert! Ray Nicholson, son of Jack, is the sociopathic stalker. He’s clearly inherited his father’s menacing grin, which he used to great effect in Smile 2. And Samara Weaving is the niece of Matrix-star Hugo Weaving. We bring it up not because these actors aren’t talented, only that it reminds us of our favorite Fran Lebowitz quote:

Borderline (2025)
Starring Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson, Jimmie Fails, Alba Baptista, Eric Dane

FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES - HBO Max

Synopsis: Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.

What we like:

  • Made on a $50M budget, Bloodlines grossed around $285M worldwide (so far), becoming the highest-grossing and best-reviewed Final Destination film ever.

  • Stuntwoman Yvette Ferguson, age 71, became the oldest person ever set on fire on-camera during the dramatic 1960s tower fire premonition. Icon!

  • Its trailer earned 178.7 million views in 24 hours, making it the second most-watched horror trailer ever, just behind 2017’s It.

What we don’t like:

  • Horror icon Tony Todd reprises his role as William Bludworth in his final screen performance. He completed filming before passing away in November 2024.

Final Destination Bloodlines
Starring Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, Tony Todd

MY OXFORD YEAR - Netflix

Synopsis: An ambitious American fulfilling her dream of studying at Oxford falls for a charming Brit hiding a secret that may upend her perfectly planned life.

What we like:

  • Directed by Iain Morris (BAFTA-nominated for The Inbetweeners), with a screenplay adapted by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne from Julia Whelan’s 2018 novel of the same name.

  • The film’s star, Sofia Carson, is also an Executive Producer on the film. She handpicked co-star Corey Mylchreest after watching his performance in Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

  • It was shot primarily on-location in Oxford and Windsor, capturing iconic college landmarks like the Bodleian Library, Christ Church, and Sheldonian Theatre.

What we don’t like:

  • Is Netflix jumping the gun on this film’s launch date? This feels like a perfect early Fall back-to-school trifle, not a dog days of summer release. Maybe we’ll crank up the a/c, pull the shades, and bust out our cozy sweaters to watch this. With the stifling heat, Fall can’t come soon enough.

WILLIAM TELL - Hulu

Synopsis: The narrative unfolds in the 14th Century, when the European nations vie for supremacy within the Holy Roman Empire. The ambitious Austrian Empire, desiring more land, invades neighbouring Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation. Protagonist William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under threat from the oppressive Austrian King and his ruthless warlords.

What we like:

  • Danish actor Claes Bangs takes on the titular role, and we’ve enjoyed him in everything from Ruben Östlund’s The Square to his role as the jerk husband in the Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters.

  • This handsomely mounted production features a deep bench of acting talent, including Jonathan Pryce, Ben Kingsley, Emily Beecham, and Rafe Spall.

What we don’t like:

William Tell
Starring Claes Bang, Connor Swindells, Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce, Golshifteh Farahani, Jonah Hauer-Kin, Ellie Bamber, Rafe Spall, Amar Chadha-Patel, Sam Keeley, Jake Dunn, Tobias Jowett, Solly McLeod, Emily Beecham
