When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report
Welcome to When To Stream’s Weekly Tracking Report. Every Friday, we’ll break down the film titles whose first window streaming premieres are still not confirmed. This column will not examine second window SVOD premieres, though we’ll obviously still be tracking and reporting those.
One note: There are hundreds of new films every year, and we’re not able to track or highlight every single one. For now, we concentrate on major studio and indie distributor releases. If there are titles you’d like us to track, let us know in the comments. We’ll do our best to follow up, but might not have the bandwidth to spotlight fully.

Tracking: Reports indicate a Blu-ray release date in Japan is set for 2/28/24, so there’s hope a US release date is concurrent. We’re sticking with our estimate for now.

Theatrical Release Date: September 22, 2023
Tracking: Last week, A24 announced they will release a Stop Making Sense: Deluxe Collector’s Edition on 4K Blu-ray, which will cost a whopping $53. No street date announced, but it is expected to ship in May. We imagine the restored film will become available digitally at the same time. We’re pushing back our estimate again.

ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY

Tracking: A VOD/Digital date of 2/20 is expected.

Tracking: A Still Small Voice is being distributed by Abramorama Films, whose digital releases are all over the map. Though short listed, the film did not receive a nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category when Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday. We imagine a streaming announcement will come soon.

PVOD Estimate: Late February/Early March 2024
Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023
Tracking: With the film’s theatrical run coming to an end, we hope this means a streaming release date announcement is imminent. Still, Toho has a reputation for holding back their releases for a long time. The film was such a monster hit, it would be unusual not to try to maximize revenue while it’s still top of mind. The film did receive an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects.

RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCE
Theatrical Release Date: December 1, 2023
Tracking: Still no word on streaming plans for this concert film. We’re hoping some kind of announcement is imminent, even if it’s a direct-to-SVOD deal. The lack of pre-order doesn’t give us much confidence we’ll see this soon. We’re holding on our estimate for now.

Tracking: Angel Studios has made The Shift available on their streaming platform, but only for their ‘Angel Investors.’ With After Death now on PVOD, we expect The Shift’s date to be a bit later this month, or early next month.

Theatrical Release Date: December 8, 2023
Tracking: Wim Wenders’ first of two film this winter (PERFECT DAYS arrives this week) is best experienced in 3D. Janus Films will likely keep this in theaters as long as they can, as they should. We don’t expect any sort of streaming release until Spring 2024.

PVOD/SVOD Estimate: Mid March 2024 (Criterion Channel)

Tracking: As with most GKIDS releases, this one is taking its time getting to digital. The film is available for pre-order on iTunes, but still no word on a release date. We’re hoping it’ll launch in time for the Oscars on March 10th. Holding on our estimate for now.

Tracking: Sony’s ‘Valentine Encore’ edition plays through this weekend, with bonus scenes included. We imagine we’ll get a digital launch date very soon.

Tracking: The film continues to lose screens, and the box-office is pretty mediocre. We still don’t think SPC will fast track it to PVOD, so we’re sticking to our estimate for now.

Tracking: The film arrived on VOD/Digital for sale-only on 2/13.

Tracking: The third A24 film to be offered for pre-order this week, Steve McQueen’s 4-hour documentary is poised to make its way to digital in the next few weeks. We’re revising our estimate accordingly.

Tracking: Sony Pictures Classics got the Oscar nomination it was looking for, as The Teacher’s Lounge was nominated for Best International Feature. Look for an aggressive theatrical roll out in the coming weeks. We’re holding on our estimate.

Tracking: The film is expected for PVOD on 2/20.

Tracking: Chile’s entry for the Best International Feature Oscar was not short listed, but we’re still anticipating MUBI will give the film a proper two month theatrical window. Look for it to hit SVOD in mid-March.

Tracking: No Oscar nominations for Ava DuVernay’s drama, so unless it catching on quickly with audiences in theaters, we’re expecting a digital release in a few weeks. Pushing back our estimate a tad.

Tracking: No nominations for Best International Feature or Animated Feature for this Sony Pictures Classics release. Still, the distributor has held firm on its 90-day theatrical window. Our estimate reflects The Peasants will follow suit.

Tracking: This Mexican import was Spirit Award nominated, so hopes were high it would get a Best International Feature nomination (it did not). Distributor Sideshow will likely follow their usual playbook: slow, steady roll out with at least a 90-day window to PVOD/SVOD.

Tracking: Indie distributor Big World Pictures is handling this Franz Rogowski drama, and we don’t have much tracking info on their releases. For now, we’re estimating a 45-day window.

Tracking: A MUBI release, so it’ll likely follow the playbook of their other releases: a 60-day theatrical exclusive window. Fallen Leaves debuted on the MUBI subscription platform before its digital release, we’re forecasting the same for this title.

Tracking: Roadside Attractions is handling distribution, and their releases usually pivot to PVOD after three weeks. That’s our forecast for this title as well.

Tracking: Focus Features is taking this horror comedy ultra-wide, which means it’ll likely adhere to Universal/Focus’s 18-day theatrical window. No reason to believe they’ll change course.

Tracking: Bleecker Street prehistoric thriller did minimal business at the box-office, so look for a quick pivot to digital. We’re estimating a window similar to their just-released I.S.S.

Tracking: IFC Films acclaimed drama opened incredibly well in limited release. It went wider on Valentine’s Day. It’s a crowd-pleaser, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed it breaks out in theaters. The next week or so should give us a better indication of a digital release.

Tracking: Paramount’s Bob Marley biopic opened very well on Valentine’s Day, and is poised to be a hit for the studio. Still, they’ve put up a pre-order for PVOD, so we imagine they’ll stick to their 30-day theatrical exclusivity playbook.

Tracking: Sony has been the studio to show the most window-flexibility with their releases. This one looks to be underperforming, but we think they’ll still hold off on a digital release for at least 45 days. No pre-order yet.
