New on Kanopy: ANORA, RUMOURS, RED RIGHT HAND, MY NAME IS ALFRED HITCHCOCK & More

We’re big fans of Kanopy here at When To Stream, so we’re here to highlight the notable titles newly added to the streaming service. Many are non-exclusive, but some are making their ‘SVOD’ debuts (though Kanopy is not a subscription service).

If you’re unfamiliar with Kanopy, it’s an on-demand streaming video platform for public and academic libraries that offers films, TV shows, educational videos and documentaries. The service is free for end users, but libraries pay fees on a pay-per-view model, from which content owners and content creators are paid.

All you need for full access is a library card through your local library. Kanopy can be viewed on a computer, mobile device, or television via a web browser supporting HTML video or the Kanopy app for Amazon Fire Tablet and Fire Stick, Android, Apple iOS, Chromecast and Roku.

All movies and television series are streamed ad-free, and no monthly subscription is required. To sign up, go to kanopy.com. It’s a fantastic deal.

Here’s what’s new on Kanopy this week:

Anora, a young woman from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents head to New York to get the marriage annulled.

Ricocheting between comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera, RUMOURS follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis. With unexpected, uproarious performances from a brilliant ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and Charles Dance, these so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realize they are suddenly alone. A genre-hopping satire of political ineptitude, the latest film from incomparable directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson is a journey into the absurd heart of power and institutional failure in a slowly burning world.

Cash (Orlando Bloom) is trying to live an honest, quiet life in rural Appalachia, taking care of Savannah (Chapel Oaks), his recently orphaned niece. But when the town's sadistic kingpin Big Cat (Andie McDowell) forces him back into her services, he proves capable of anything to protect his town and the only family he has left.

A century after Alfred Hitchcock's first film, he remains one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. But how does his vast body of work and legacy hold up in today’s society?

In THE ANIMAL KINGDOM, a visionary thriller that drops viewers into an extraordinary world where mutations in human genetics cause people to transform into hybrid creatures, François (Roman Duris) does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious condition. As some of the creatures disappear into a nearby forest, François embarks with Emile (Paul Kircher), their 16-year-old son, on a quest to find her with help from a local police officer (Adèle Exarchopoulos).

From acclaimed director Thomas Cailley, the film world premiered as the opening night selection of Cannes Un Certain Regard.

After the tragic death of his father, 18 year old Totone is thrust into the unexpected and very adult role of looking after his younger sister and their failing family farm in the Jura section of France. He assumes even more responsibility when he enters a cash competition for the best Comte cheese made in this western part of the French Alps. A “verité” look at the hardscrabble life of French agriculture, HOLY COW is simultaneously a coming of age story and, above all, an ode to the love of cheese.

When melancholic construction worker Dan finds himself drifting from his wife and daughter, he discovers community and purpose in a local theater's production of Romeo and Juliet. As the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life, he and his family are forced to confront a personal loss.

Academy Award-nominee Ian McKellen stars as a powerful London theater critic who lures a struggling actress into a blackmail scheme with deadly consequences. A suspenseful thriller co-starring Gemma Arterton, Mark Strong, and Lesley Manville.

An ex-special forces operative takes a job to provide security for a journalist as she interviews a dictator, but when a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, they are forced to escape into the jungle.

MAD ABOUT THE BOY: THE NOEL COWARD STORY

The extraordinary life of playwright, singer, actor, composer, and director Noël Coward, who rose from poverty to stardom while keeping his sexuality a secret. Featuring Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Frank Sinatra, Michael Caine and Lucille Ball. Narrated by Alan Cumming. With Rupert Everett as the voice of Noël Coward. Directed by Academy Award Nominee Barnaby Thompson.
