New on Kanopy: BEING MARIA, WILLIAM TELL, STEALING PULP FICTION, THE MOOGAI & More

We’re big fans of Kanopy here at When To Stream, so we’re here to highlight the notable titles newly added to the streaming service. Many are non-exclusive, but some are making their ‘SVOD’ debuts (though Kanopy is not a subscription service).

If you’re unfamiliar with Kanopy, it’s an on-demand streaming video platform for public and academic libraries that offers films, TV shows, educational videos and documentaries. The service is free for end users, but libraries pay fees on a pay-per-view model, from which content owners and content creators are paid.

All you need for full access is a library card through your local library. Kanopy can be viewed on a computer, mobile device, or television via a web browser supporting HTML video or the Kanopy app for Amazon Fire Tablet and Fire Stick, Android, Apple iOS, Chromecast and Roku.

All movies and television series are streamed ad-free, and no monthly subscription is required. To sign up, go to kanopy.com. It’s a fantastic deal.

Here’s what’s new on Kanopy this week:

Maria Schneider (Anamaria Vartolomei) is a promising, young French actress. When she gets the lead in a feature film directed by an acclaimed Italian filmmaker and starring one of America’s most beloved actors, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. Her collaborators, director Bernardo Bertolucci and star Marlon Brando (Matt Dillon) seem to be bringing out the best in Maria, sharing a warm rapport and mentorship with the 19-year old girl. Until one day, when the two men conspire to shoot a crucial sex scene as a harrowing assault without letting Maria in on the plan. The film goes on to be lauded as a fearless artistic breakthrough, but for Maria, it’s the beginning of a living hell. Based on the behind-the-scenes true story of the making of Last Tango in Paris, Jessica Palud’s sensitive biopic centers Maria’s story for the first time.

The narrative unfolds in the 14th century amidst the days of the Holy Roman Empire, where Europe's nations fiercely vie for supremacy, and the ambitious Austrians, desiring more land, encroach upon Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation. William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under threat from the oppressive Austrian King and his ruthless warlords.

STEALING PULP FICTION

STEALING PULP FICTION follows a group of enterprising wannabes and their eccentric therapist as they concoct a plot to steal Quentin Tarantino’s personal 35mm print of his famous 1994 film from his movie theater. What begins as a simple heist quickly spirals into a chaotic misadventure filled with unexpected twists and mishaps. From Tribeca Films.

A young Aboriginal couple bring home their second baby. What should be a joyous time takes a sinister turn as the mother starts seeing a malevolent spirit she is convinced is trying to take her baby.

This ‘free-form film’ spans 40 years in Leos Carax’s work life and explores its most significant chapters while questioning the evolution of the word over those decades.

Five women head out on a remote hiking retreat, but only four return, each telling a different story. Detective Aaron Falk (Eric Bana) must find out what really happened before time runs out.

Dandelion, a struggling but determined singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, reluctantly takes a last-ditch effort gig where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey's eclectic and nomadic group of struggling musicians, the two kindred spirits make music together and strike up an intoxicating whirlwind romance that leads Dandelion to a deeper appreciation of her artistic journey and the discovery of a voice that is authentically her own.

Wannabe actor Zachary Horwitz was desperate to make it big as a movie star. The only thing stopping him was talent. BAD ACTOR: A HOLLYWOOD PONZI SCHEME is a juicy true story about deception, denial, and the seductive promise of fame and fortune.

It is said that those who can't do, teach. But what about those who can't do - OR teach? Labeled a deadbeat by his ex, a failure by his mother, and a shell of himself by his best friend, Lousy Carter is having trouble getting people on his side. Cast adrift on a soulless college campus, with six months to live, Lousy Carter is offered one last chance to live out his dream.

FIRST COW

In the 1820s, a taciturn loner and skilled cook travels west to Oregon Territory, where he meets a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune. Soon the two team up on a dangerous scheme to steal milk from the wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow – the first, and only, in the territory.

LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – Richard Penniman. The film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions.
