MUBI has set a streaming premiere date for their drama THE HISTORY OF SOUND, which will begin streaming on their subscription platform on November 1st, 2025. The film world premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and launched in US theaters on September 12th, 2025.

Although not announced, MUBI usually offers their films for digital sale day-and-date with the SVOD launch.

The History of Sound is directed by Oliver Hermanus, written by Ben Shattuck, and based on his short story of the same name. It stars Josh O’Connor, Paul Mescal, Chris Cooper, Peter Mark Kendall, Molly Price, Raphael Sbarge, Hadley Robinson, Emma Canning, Briana Middleton, and Alessandro Bedetti.

In the film, two young music students, Lionel and David, attending the Boston Conservatory in 1917, bond over their shared love of folk music. They reconnect a few years later, embarking on a song collecting trip in the backwaters of Maine.
