Here are next week’s highlights:
Monday, June 16th, 2025
LOVE ME - Paramount+ w/Showtime
Synopsis: In a story that spans billions of years, a buoy and a satellite meet online long after humanity’s extinction. As they learn what life was like on Earth, they discover themselves and what it means to be alive and in love.
What we like:
Two of the most talented actors working in film, Kristen Stewart and Steven Yeun, team up for a sci-fi romance in which they play a weather buoy (Stewart) and a satellite (Yeun).
The film received the 2024 Alfred P. Sloan Prize, bestowed annually by Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to "an outstanding feature film focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer, or mathematician as a major character."
What we don’t like:
Unfortunately, the film received middling reviews, and earned only $350k at the domestic box-office. Still, it’s an unusual premise with appealing stars, we’ll definitely be checking it out.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Synopsis: A mercenary takes on the job of tracking down a target on a plane but must protect her when they're surrounded by people trying to kill both of them.
What we like:
At 46, Josh Hartnett is back in a big way. He performed nearly all his own stunts during the film’s intense 25-day shoot, and trained rigorously for seven major fight sequences and ended up “bruised from head to toe.”
Though the story unfolds on a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, the movie was filmed in Hungary, including at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The production team built a full-scale airplane set to capture the claustrophobic action.
What we don’t like:
We thought this might be a sleeper early summer success story, but it only pulled in about $3.5M at the domestic box-office. At least it got a theatrical release here in the US. In the UK, it went straight to SVOD service Sky Cinema.
FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Synopsis: Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.
What we like:
Made on a $50M budget, Bloodlines grossed around $260M worldwide (so far), becoming the highest-grossing and best-reviewed Final Destination film ever.
Stuntwoman Yvette Ferguson, age 71, became the oldest person ever set on fire on-camera during the dramatic 1960s tower fire premonition. Icon!
Its trailer earned 178.7 million views in 24 hours, making it the second most-watched horror trailer ever, just behind 2017’s It.
What we don’t like:
Horror icon Tony Todd reprises his role as William Bludworth in his final screen performance. He completed filming before passing away in November 2024.
FRIENDSHIP - $24.99 Sale / $19.99 Rental
Synopsis: Suburban dad Craig falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor Austin, as Craig’s attempts to make an adult male friend threaten to ruin both of their lives.
What we like:
Andrew DeYoung makes his feature directorial debut, bringing sharp, cringe‑laden humor to the big screen. His television credits are impressive, directing episodes of Pen15, Our Flag Means Death, and High Fidelity.
Paul Rudd’s character was originally named Brian, but Rudd personally suggested renaming him Austin, to avoid associations with his familiar "Brian" roles from Anchorman.
Kate Mara is a standout, playing each scene completely straight. She acts like she’s in a drama, and it’s the perfect choice.
What we don’t like:
The role of socially awkward Craig was written specifically with Tim Robinson in mind, and Robinson’s brand of humor is not everyone’s flavor. If you don’t enjoy the cringe comedy of his hit sketch series I Think You Should Leave, this might not be for you.
SALLY - Disney+, Hulu
Synopsis: Sally Ride's groundbreaking journey as the first American woman in space concealed a deeply personal story. Her life partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, unveils their covert 27-year romance and its accompanying sacrifices.
What we like:
Cristina Costantini, known for acclaimed documentaries like Science Fair and Mucho Mucho Amor, premiered this Sally Ride documentary at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Sloan Feature Film Prize, honoring it for its outstanding depiction of science and technology.
Over 5,000 reels of film, including 16 mm, 35 mm, and 70 mm, were sifted through by the filmmakers. The editorial team reviewed roughly 17,000 clips to capture Ride’s story.
Ride’s 27-year partnership with Tam O’Shaughnessy is central to the documentary, with Tam as the story’s narrator. The film spotlights a love story publicly hidden until after Ride’s passing. Happy Pride!
What we don’t like:
The film recounts how NASA mistakenly packed 100 tampons for Ride’s one‑week Challenger mission, underscoring their unpreparedness for female astronauts’ real needs.

ASH - Shudder
Synopsis: A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.
What we like:
Record producer, rapper, DJ and filmmaker Flying Lotus delivers a stylish head-trip in this sci-fi spectacle. FlyLo (as he is sometimes known, not our nickname for him) directed the ‘Ozzy’s Dungeon’ segment in Shudder’s V/H/S/99.
Although he’ll always be Jesse Pinkman to us, it’s great to see Aaron Paul get another lead role in a feature.
We also love Eiza González, who can also be seen in last month’s Guy Ritchie action-adventure Fountain of Youth.
What we don’t like:
Though the film received decent reviews, it didn’t attract much business in theaters, earning just over $1M domestically.
EYE FOR AN EYE - $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Synopsis: Follows the story of Anna who grieves the death of her parents as she moves from New York to Florida to stay with her grandmother. She falls in with some other teens, but when she sees a grisly act of violence, she finds herself trapped.
What we like:
Director Colin Tilley, known for his music video work with superstars like Cardi B, Justin Bieber, and Nicki Minaj, makes his feature film debut.
The story is adapted from Mr. Sandman, a dark adult horror picture book by Elisa Victoria. She co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Tully.
What we don’t like:
Kinda bums us out to see Emmy-winner S. Epatha Merkerson in straight-to-streaming schlock like this, but we hope she had fun. And maybe it’ll be good schlock!
INSIDE - $14.99 Sale / TBD Rental
Synopsis: Mel is transferred from a juvenile to an adult jail and is taken under the wing of Mark, Australia's most hated criminal, and Warren, a soon-to-be-paroled inmate. The parental love triangle that forms between them becomes their doom.
What we like:
Written and directed by Charles Williams, this is his full-length feature debut. He’s previously best known for the 2018 Cannes-winning short All These Creatures.
In his follow-up to his Oscar-nominated role in The Brutalist, Guy Pearce is again earning raves for his supporting performance.
The film world premiered at last year’s Melbourne International Film Festival and just screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, and critics are raving. It currently sits at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
What we don’t like:
As with most prison films (at least those not featuring Paddington), there’s some brutality that can be pretty unpleasant. But if you like the genre, this one seems like a must-see.
KPOP DEMON HUNTERS - Netflix
Synopsis: When K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey aren't selling out stadiums, they're using their secret powers to protect their fans from supernatural threats.
What we like:
Boasting original songs produced by heavyweight K‑Pop makers like Teddy Park, TheBlackLabel, IDO, and featuring an original track “Takedown” by Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung of TWICE, the film dives headfirst into authentic K‑Pop vibes.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the film is a wild, colorful mashup of K‑Pop spectacle, girl-power, supernatural action, and comedy.
What we don’t like:
We’ll admit the whole K-Pop movement is just not something we’ve participated in. Our experience starts and ends with Psy’s Gangnam Style video. So this isn’t for us, but as always, we hope it’s good!
A MINECRAFT MOVIE - HBO Max
Synopsis: Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.
What we like:
Despite mixed reviews, the film has powered itself to a box-office total of $951M (so far) worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2025 and the second-highest-grossing video game film of all time.
‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’, Jack Black's 34-second song about cooking chicken with lava, became a viral hit, making it the shortest song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
Popular YouTubers like DanTDM, Aphmau, Mumbo Jumbo, and LDShadowLady make uncredited appearances. Additionally, Jens Bergensten, one of Minecraft's lead designers, appears as a waiter. We’ve never heard of any of them (we’re old)!
What we don’t like:
A line from the film, "Chicken jockey!", sparked a viral trend where fans would cheer, dance, and even bring live chickens to theaters, leading to some screenings being halted. Our theatrical nightmare.
Happy Streaming Everyone!
